I and a few other people (noth, cyberkitsune, and maybe others who I've forgotten) joined Fist's discord server ("the cappuccino server") from the reddit post and began to RE the game. I came across a post on r/REGames around asking for people with knowledge of reverse engineering to help preserve a game that was soon-to-be shut down (MHFZ). It takes zero time to clone your browser and use your personal data. Because if you mess up, you are literally opening a door for every possible hacker or scrpt kiddie who just want to have fun with you. And, for God sake, BE F*CKING CAREFUL while forwarding ports, exposing personal IP address and creating firewall rules. Instead, pick a dedicated machine, which can be a simple Raspberry Pi, a Google Cloud or AWS machine or a home server (if you want to play alone or with friends).

The only thing I can say about this is to not install anything useless on your PC, especially a DBMS (which is always running in the background) and a programming language like Go just to compile a game server. Most of the tutorials found online come from people whose don't know what they're doing, making their own personal Windows installation (and the installation of the people following the tutorial) a complete mess of programs they will never use again. I do not have much to say about this topic: they are pretty useless.
How about the DIY tutorial on the internet? There is no need to open two or more terminals and launch as many commands as the number of applications that are gonna be used. And that's because you can literally setup an X number of services and applications with only a couple of files and a single command. Docker (and Kubernetes) is an awsome tool to use both for developers and users. I've never seen anybody mentioning Docker either, which is a really big shame.

Should a non professional install and use a databse? Not if his intent is to open the server to the public. Is it easy to setup a Postgres database? Yes, it is. Are its performances good enough? Sure they are. And what about Postgres? It is simply one of the most used DBMS by professionals. Sure, it easy to pick up and build some trivial basic programs, but building a fully functional game server is not easy task, trust me. But yet, nobody really understood why the original dev choose Go and Postgres for this project. The Erupe server is made in Go, which is an awsome programming language. In fact, Windows is not reccomended for any kind of server.

I'm well aware that the average PC user/gamer has NEVER used (or even seen) a Linux distro nor used a terminal in the proper way. I've seen a "guide" to host the server on a Linux dedicated machine only in the Erupe server official repo. Or at least they mainly use Windows for any purpose (even developing a server application, and that is a pretty newbie thing to do). But let's dive into the actual topic.Īs far as I can tell, every user or developer involved with this server thing is a Windows user. I'm currently working on the MHF server and a tool for convert the MHRise saves from Switch to PC.Īll of this just to say that I know what I'm talking about. Some smaller Unity projects (even if Unity is not my engine of choice) I recently helped out finding a way to make Pokémon Legends Arceus running smoothly on Yuzu with the 4Chan /vp/ community

Aghs, an Italian 29 years old professional software achitect and developer. Ok, here is my thoughts on why a private server should be managed, developed and setted up only by people who knows what they are actually doing.īut before talking shit about the dramas who is going on in the international MHFZ community, let me introduce myself (so you have a bit of background on who I am and why I can give my opinion on this topic).
